A man's (Abhishek Bachchan) innocent gift to his grandfather sparks a power struggle in a village that recently received electricity.

Dina Nath is honored by the Indian Government, which is televised live. While receiving the honors, Dina Nath informs the Government that his village is still without electricity, and he is promised that electricity will be provided in his village immediately. And electricity is provided in the village. Dina Nath's son, Kanji, who is in Mumbai, hears of this and returns to the village along with a C-Band ten foot satellite dish and a super flat stereo television. When the satellite is set-up, the villagers are thrilled by the TV shows. This leads to the village priest complaining to Chotey Thakur Rudra Pratap Singh that the villagers are turning away from his temple and worship. Rudra is not concerned as he himself has a TV set in his home. But when the priest informs Rudra that his sister, Kesar and Kanji are in love, Rudra makes a threat to destroy Kanaji and all of the village in the presence of a TV crew filming the whole drama - live worldwide.

The disputed area between the borders of India and Pakistan is the scene of heavy terrorist activity, as they intent to intensify their agitation to put pressure on the Indian Government to free Kashmir and Kashmiris and let them govern themselves independently. An attempt is made on the Home Minister himself, in vain though. Then the police raid the Home Minister's bodyguard, Noor Mohamed Azaad, house killing his mother, father, a journalist friend, and sister, arresting him, beating him up and then throwing him out from their jeep. The Home Minister and the police promise action, but a devastated Noor decides to take up arms against the Indian forces and joins the terrorists, headed by Masood Qadri.

After his father is killed by a bandit by the name of Bharat of Chandravan, Naagsen is crowned King, and he rules his kingdom along with his wife, Rani Kundala, and sister, Rajkumari Chanda. Naagsen is not satiated with Kundala, and has an affair with Dancer, Kala, who he houses in a palace of her own. When the King of Kamroo, who is also a magician, abducts Chanda, she is rescued by a brave warrior, Deepu, who asks Naagsen for her hand in marriage. Naagsen is displeased and asks for the bloodline of Deepu, and when he finds out that Deepu is the son of Bharat, he has him arrested and placed in the dungeon. But Chanda helps him escape as both have fallen in love with each other. Naagsen hatches a scheme with Kala, and as a result, Deepu is lured back into the palace, arrested, and jailed. Deepu's friend, Mallu, a snake charmer, manages to free Deepu, only to have him re-captured, jailed, blinded, and he, along with Chanda, banished from the kingdom.
